Welcome to the Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills and Education Center. The center provides classroom and hands-on basic-to-advanced cardiac surgical training through our Cardiothoracic Resident Training Program and our High School Student Stanford Summer Internship that provides education to those interested in the field of medicine and surgery.

Hands-on Training

Surgical training traditionally has been based on an apprenticeship model, with the predominance of technical training in the operating room. However, the operating room may no longer be the ideal location for early surgical training because of time constraints in the operating room, changes in resident work hours requiring more structured training, and more difficult procedures in higher risk patients. Based on these concerns, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills and Education Center focuses on providing needed training and practice outside the operating room.

Goals

Founded by the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford, the goals of the Center are:

to provide education of and insights in cardiothoracic surgery to students (high school to undergraduate level) considering a career in medicine and surgery

to provide basic surgical training to medical students and cardiothoracic residents who are involved in training for a career in cardiothoracic surgery

to provide supplementary laboratory experience to those requiring additional hands-on cardiothoracic surgical training

Instructors

Members of the Faculty in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Residents in training in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

High School Summer Internship

The Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills and Education Center Summer Internship is designed to educate high school students considering careers in science, medicine, and public health in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology as well as surgical techniques that are used in medical training.

Cardiothoracic Resident Training Program

The Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills and Education Center focuses on providing cardiothoracic surgery residents training and practice outside the operating room.
